Henna aftercare: how to get a deeper stain
The colour is decided in the twelve hours after the cone leaves your hand.

Before your appointment
Come with clean, dry skin. Wash the hands or feet that morning and skip lotion, oil and sun cream — anything left on the skin sits between the paste and the stain. If you exfoliate, do it the day before rather than on the day.
Leave the paste on
Leave the paste on as long as you can bear — six hours is good, overnight is better. The longer the henna sits, the more dye passes into the skin, and the darker the stain sits once it oxidises.
Keep warm while it sits. Warmth helps the dye take, which is why stains are darkest on the palms and the soles of the feet. A little lemon and sugar dabbed over the dried paste helps it stay on rather than crumbling off early.
Scrape, don't wash
Scrape the dried paste off rather than washing it. Water in the first few hours lifts the colour before it has set. Warm the hands over a clove pan or a mug of tea, then seal with a little mustard or coconut oil.
Keep the design away from water for the rest of the day — twelve to twenty-four hours if you can.
Why it looks orange at first
The stain darkens for two days after it looks finished. What is orange on the morning of the mehndi will be deep brown by the wedding.
How long henna lasts
Most stains last one to three weeks. Palms and soles hold colour longest; the backs of the hands and the arms fade faster. The stain does not wash out so much as wear away as the top layer of skin renews.
To make it last, go easy on hand washing where you can, avoid chlorine and harsh soaps, keep the skin moisturised, and leave off scrubs until you are ready for it to fade.

How long should I leave henna on?
At least six hours. Overnight gives the deepest colour.
Why is my henna orange?
Because it is fresh. Every natural henna stain starts orange and deepens to brown or maroon over the next 24 to 48 hours. Give it two days before you judge the colour.
Can I shower after henna?
Wait if you can. Keep the design dry for twelve to twenty-four hours after the paste comes off; a quick shower is fine after that.
How long does henna last?
